Favorite Color
I wrote this poem back in January, published it, then decided I hated it. So I went back in and rewrote it. After an inspirational open mic night I attended and advice from a fellow writer, I was able to rewrite it, and I’m very happy with the final results. I’ve always loved the use of color in poetry and fictional stories. Colors can mean so many things, and I really wanted to emphasize not only what the color purple symbolizes but what it means to me as well. Another friend asked me who the “you” in this is. While the “you” has a very specific meaning to me, I like to think it can be interpreted in any way the reader would like to interpret it. As always, I hope you enjoy :)
My favorite color is purple.
Like a deep shade of plum,
Or light like a soft lavender and periwinkle.
The boldness of a loud fuchsia,
And the dullness of a lilac.
It’s in the glow of an amethyst,
And the bitterness of an onion.
It’s the stain of a blueberry on my lips
Despite it being a “blue” berry.
I see it everywhere,
And in everything,
Seeking it out as if it’s a
Source of comfort knowing that it’s always there.
Not only does it color the galaxies,
It paints the walls of my childhood bedroom,
Threads through my clothing,
And lies meticulously in decor and furniture around my apartment.
It’s not only in the music you play,
But it’s in the inventions you create,
And the messages that you send me
In the quiet of the night.
My feelings are forever eternal,
Stuck in the precipice of always wanting more
But never wanting to express the need
Due to fear of losing everything I currently have.
My favorite color encourages bravery.
It demands me to be bold and strong,
All of which I struggle with when faced
With the decision of do I or don't I?
I remind myself of its pre-existing rarity,
And to make sure I hold myself to a higher power.
Much like it had been worn only by royalty,
I know I am worth more than a second thought.
Still though, I send hope to the heavens I don't believe in,
Searching for the validation I so desperately crave.
At night I foolishly dream you will wake up
And you will see me for more than who I am to you now.
I want you to see me everywhere,
And in everything.
I want you to seek me out like I'm
Your source of comfort knowing I'm always there.
I want to one day be your favorite color,
Just like how my favorite color is purple.
