Sneakers

Another poem written for my Intro to Poetry class in college. I believe this was one I wrote when we were asked to personify something, and I instantly thought of sneakers, or shoes in general. Our shoes travel everywhere with us, and they see all the good and bad of each day. It’s probably a good thing that shoes are inanimate objects and can’t talk - who knows what kind of stories they’d be able to tell about the people who wear them.

From the first day you bring me home,

I will go wherever you go,

My surface untouched and barren

Waiting eagerly to journey along with you.

I follow you everywhere,

Keeping a record of

Mud and dirt on the whiteness of my soles,

Protecting the sensitive skin that hides within.

I remember every small detail.

The cold of hospital tiles,

The plush of carpet in your apartment,

The rough of grass from your favorite park.

I guide you each step of the way,

Never losing track of where you’ve been

And waiting in anticipation of

Where you’re going next.
